The Golden Legend meets The Bells of Strasbourg Cathedral
- As it is, The Golden Legend (1886) by Arthur Sullivan and The Bells of Strasbourg Cathedral (1874) by Franz Liszt are rarely performed cantata settings of the same Longfellow text, The Golden Legend (1851), Longfellow's poetic adaptation of Der Arme Heinrich by poet-Minnesinger Hartmann von Aue (1170-1210). On February 26th, 2011, The Longfellow Chorus, Orchestra and Soloists will present both works together on the same day during the fifth-annual Longfellow Chorus Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 204th Birthday Choral Festival, also featuring the winning cantatas, choruses and songs from the 2010-2011 Longfellow Chorus International Composers Competition. Mission Statement of The Longfellow Chorus, Inc.:
The Corporation shall organize and maintain a chorus to perform and
record vocal and choral settings of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poetry, written from 1840 to the present, shall inspire and commission new vocal and choral
settings of Longfellow's poetry, and shall perform choral music of the
Romantic and immediate post-Romantic eras, ca. 1825-1920.
